Kaufmann Ventures/Breaking Into Sports Playbook

Your Career in Sports Starts Here

The sports industry is competitive, exciting, and a little intimidating.

This guide gives you the roadmap, insider tips, and confidence to get off the bench and into the game.

Why this guide exists

Breaking into sports can feel impossible and no one really tells you how to start.

You've got passion, energy, and ideas, but no one seems to give you a chance. You're told to "network more" to "start at the bottom" or to just "keep applying." Meanwhile it feels like everyone else already knows someone.

I've been there and I remember exactly how it feels.

But here’s the thing: sports is also one of the most rewarding industries you can work in. You’ll be part of something bigger than yourself, creating moments that fans will never forget.

That's why I built this guide. Not to give you generic advice, but to show you what actually works:

  • How to make real connections

  • How to find overlooked opportunities

  • How to stand out from a sea of applicants

With the right preparation and approach, you can absolutely carve out your place in the sports industry. You deserve a clear path forward and this playbook gives you one.

Who this guide is for

This guide is for the people who make the game happen: the business minds, the creators, the planners. The ones working the BUSINESS OF SPORTS.

Because the truth is: every game, every sponsorship every sold-out crowd happens thanks to the people who keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

I built this guide for three types of future game changers:

  • College students ready to land their first sports role. The ones eager to learn how the industry actually works beyond the field.

  • Recent grads who love sports but don’t know where to start. The ones looking for a clear plan to turn that passion into a real career path.

  • Young professionals pivoting into sports from another field. The ones bringing fresh experience and drive but needing the insider roadmap to make the leap.

If that’s you, this playbook will show you how to break in, stand out, and build a career you're proud of.

You don't need to be on the field to change the game. You just need to know how to play it and this is where it starts.

What's inside

This isn’t theory or fluff. It’s a real-world playbook built from my experience and showing you what it takes to get your start, grow your network, and stand out in one of the most competitive industries out there.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • How teams really make money (and why understanding that can be one of the fastest ways to make yourself valuable)

  • The truth about entry-level jobs (what to expect and how to turn that first role into your launchpad)

  • Hidden-door opportunities (the less obvious paths into the industry)

  • Networking strategies that actually work (how to build real relationships, not empty connections)

  • Action plans (how to structure your resume, polish your LinkedIn, craft your outreach emails, and build a 30/60/90 day plan that managers love)

  • Real talk (staying persistent, growing your reputation, and building momentum)

Think of it as the crash course you didn’t get in school: practical, honest, and designed to help you break into sports.

The playbook you need for the career you want

Why trust this guide?

I wasn’t born into the industry. I didn’t have connections waiting to open doors. Instead, I was motivated, curious, and ready to work hard.

My first job? Selling tickets for a minor league hockey team in Florida. The pay was low, the hours were long, and I was doing everything from sales calls to mascot duty.

But that job changed everything. It taught me how teams actually make money, how the business of sports and sports sponsorships work, and how to build relationships on and off the field, the pitch, the ice, the court, and more.

Those lessons became the foundation for a career that's taken me from minor league arenas to working with teams in the NFL, MLB, and major brands across the world.

This guide distills everything I learned along the way, so you don't have to figure it out alone. It's not theory, and it's not recycled advice. It's the real roadmap for breaking into the business side of the sports industry and building a career that lasts.

If you've got the drive, this playbook gives you the direction.

Why this matters now

The sports industry is evolving faster than ever. New leagues, new revenue models, new opportunities and roles that didn't exist even a few years ago are all opening up right now.

Teams and brands are expanding their digital, sponsorship, and analytics capabilities, and they're looking for people who understand or are willing to learn how the business side of sports actually works.

The opportunity is real, but so is the competition. Every year, hundreds of people apply for a handful of openings. And the sooner you prepare, the faster you’ll stand out.

This guide makes sure you’re not just another resume in the stack.

If you’ve read this far, you already know this:
You want to build a career in sports.
You just need the right game plan.

This guide gives you one, built from real experience, designed to help you break in, and ready for you to start today.
